Thank you for the advice Baragain, I appreciate it.

My goal (lofty as it is) is to eventually get my stats near or as close to:

    2k dmg
    1.6 to 1.8 speed
    10K hp
    65% armor
    50% crit hit
    230% crit dmg
    50% resist

Luck, patience, and tons of farming and upgrading will be required to get near this, but to me that is half the fun.

I've been so lucky to find a great guild that has helped me and one day it would be nice to be able to do that with others who are up and coming.

This was sort of my thinking, at first. But from somewhere (probably as I started to get quite a few legendary drops between levels 37-40), I got it in my head never go backwards (ie, from Legend back to Extra). Unfortunately, after reaching lvl 41, the legendary drops have virtually disappeared, and I now get occasional extraordinaries -- some with pretty good stats -- but not yet anything to replace the legendary gear I already have. Basically, I'm thinking ahead: if I do get a great Extra drop, at this point, I should keep it, even if that means nixing (melting?) the Legendary.

Yeah, the randomness is a PITA, and it took a while to get used to. But it does give the game a certain ... uniqueness.

Open up map2 (and mortis), and the legendary drops will reappear. But yeah, a near perfect extraordinary is worth using.

Got it. Thanks for the replies :).
You need more resistance? Are you sure? I've usually seen people be content with just over 1000... also, your armor is OK too. HP isn't bad either, but yeah, more wouldn't hurt. Now with critical damage, this stat is my sworn enemy (and quite possibly, not just mine) because I cannot stress enough how many potentially (very) good items critical damage lines have ruined for me. I almost got a perfect legendary 2H... BAM, one line of 36,8% critical damage... a quite nice weapon adornment, and BOOF - a line of 6,2% (and these are only the ones I kept, because I couldn't find any better). When it's not on weapons, these lines are so low that it adds to the annoying-ness. Bottom line: granted I can have great gear, I'm more than pleased with the base 200%.
Depends on how much gold you're willing to throw in until you actually get a good one.
That's just your luck. I, for example, have never seen a legendary shield until today. With everything else, I got at least two.
You are aware of the fact that some people can't build such a character as yours in a year or more, let alone 40 days, right? You should be happier with what you have :D, but your will to always get better is admirable indeed. My advice: cut on that resitance and add some damage. You can find pretty big lines even on right-side items, and if you have resitance lines on any of them, try to find replacements that have damage instead of resistance. See how that goes; you have plenty to spare. You might even get more HP/armor along the way, if you hit better enchantments.
Don't think like that ("never go backwards"). Baragain explained it with a very solid example, and so you don't really go "backwards" in quality, but just in looks/category/rarity/call it however you wish. If you get an extraordinary item better than a legendary, by all means replace it. Yes, it may be harder to get an exo > leg rather than a leg > leg, but it is possible. The main concern should be items' overall stats and how they fuse together in your build, not how they look (you'll have plenty of time to mingle with looks after you've built your character to a significant level). Here's an example of my own: I once got an extraordinary shield... with two lines of +armor and one line of +critical hit rate (yes, critical hit rate... I also saw damage on an other shield that also had critical hit rate... they should definitely stop that and leave offensive enchants for offensive offhands and defensive lines for defensive offhands... now DKs don't have this division between offhands - only exceptions are two uniques shields that are offense-oriented: the Shield Of Slaughter & Sargon's Shadow Shield but they have those awesome 2Hs if they don't want to use a shield and a 1H)... so, back to the point, sorry for the long divagation... that exo shield wasn't very good for an exo, but then I found a magic shield that had 1 line of increased block rate and increased block amount - and I switched, because it was more of a shield than the previous one. I've just replaced that with a better legendary today, but otherwise, would've still used it for who knows how long.

As far as spending gold goes, other than maybe one day going to the cloak of power (1000 gold) which would be replaced anyway with Warlord, there really isn't a ton of use for gold. Sure you need it for gem swapping, but that's about it. I have 325 in gold now and if I started selling gear versus melting everything, that number would go up easy enough.

So far everything on my right side is just armor, hp and resist. None have any dmg or crit. Finding items with dmg that somewhat have the same range in armor is not all that easy.

Currently my armor is at 61,28%
    Crit 48,65%
    Resist 46,14%

I realize it's not bad, but could be better.

I take away my current sword and I'm at 248 dmg (just gear), so there is plenty of room for improvement on that part, but a weapon with 1000/1200 dmg on it's own is a wonderful thing to hope for.

My adornment is all 4 lines of crit with a total of 578.
My amulet is 3 lines of crit with a total of 518 and 1 line of resist 155.
My exo ring is 350 crit and 8,8% crit dmg.
My belt has 19dmg with 172 crit and 424 armor.

It's really hard to find something that really stands out in order to replace any of them.

My helmet has 487 armor, 453 hp
Shoulders have 258 armor, 416 resist (could easily replace this one)
Torso has 653 armor, 520 hp.
    Gloves have 444 armor, 266hp, 179 resist
Boots have 621 armor, 226 hp, 134 resist.

When a right hand item shows up with a little dmg, they have very little armor or hp (so far with what I've found).

How can I give up 400 or 600 armor for 10 dmg points?

Now I can take a few hits but can't kill quickly. If I swap too quickly, I'll be able to kill faster but I'll also die faster. Trying to find that balance is difficult.

I know that finding one of the monster OP swords is just this side of impossible, but a really good one might just be possible and couple that with an additional 30% Warlord bonus (if and when I get that set) and I should be able to solo HOD using nothing but green with relative ease.

Sure I would love to one day be able to solo Mortis and Destructor, but for now I just want to be able to get through HOD in a reasonable amount of time and not have to spend over an hour slowly running and hiding like I do now.

I'm open to suggestions on which piece of gear to replace if it won't make me into a glass cannon.

You have a lot of resist on your gear, and resist is most valuable for PVP. I would aim to replace the resist gear with armor lines and hp lines. And if you find yourself low on resist you then get +40 to +80 resist gems.

I have no resist lines on my DK's gear except for the sargon helmet and gloom cloak, both which give ander resist. I only have 2 on my SM (on a leg ring and one of the witch chaser pieces).

Also, if you're going 2H, getting leg gloves with 1 or 2 attack speed lines might help with your map2 survivability by allowing you to build up rage faster and spam MWS with heal.

I assume you picked all or most of the hp regen talents?

I'm trying to figure out how dmg is calculated and my math isn't adding up very well.

    My current sword shows:

    301-374 dmg
    37,5% increased weapon dmg
    +98 dmg
    and I have 3 +5 rubies

yet when I put it on (with no other gear)

    my base stats are 634-764

The math isn't adding up for me, so I'm missing something.

Now it was suggested to me that I should consider the Steam Axe as a way to boost my dmg. Here is a side by side.

100% increased dmg should be 356-660, yet since my way of adding a percentage doesn't add up currently, I'm not so sure.

So based on side by side comparisons, will swapping my current exo sword for the steam axe make a noticeable difference in my dmg stats?

I used to have some great blue gear, for a long time I used it, because nothing better came along (virtually skipped over extraordinaries right into legendaries). Thnx for your elucidated response. :)

I guess this is a good time to ask: what does map2 mean exactly (and map1)?

M1 or map1 is ocean of bones and m2 or map2 is hall of death or HoD

@sirsquishy your ress is way to high compare to other stats.

Stats are not bad at all, but trie to get better gems first and a lot GoP

I gave advice to all dk in my guild...every, not just att gems, gem have to be polished, than you go on dmg and speed higher if you like

And trie to go for 20 hp, 16 ress (no extra open slots and without shield)

    Good luck ;)

With those gems, no. The best benefit of the Steam Axe is when you get nicer gems. If you could fill up the Steam Axe with 4x+15s (which I realize you are quite a ways away from yet), the +60 damage would actually be +120 due to the 100%. Compared to the same 4 gems in your sword, you'd only gain +82.5 damage. The other thing you'd gain from the Steam Axe is crit which I know you have plenty of. In your position right now, you probably would not benefit as much from the Steam Axe as I had first thought.

Thanks Baragain, I tried using the optimizer website, but it doesn't list the steam axe so I couldn't figure out if I would get the needed boost in dmg by buying the axe or not.

I know that at some point I'll need to heavily invest in gems, both rubies and sapphires, but I am really hoping to gain with equipment that is truly worth investing in. Opening up slots in gear that is temporary seems like a waste to me. I know that I can transfer gems once I find better items, but it's not like upgrading to 3 polished rubies right now is going to make a major difference in my stats.

I appreciate all the advice so far, I guess it's back to farming until I can either find something better or get enough to try crafting one or more.

The hardest part of the right hand items is gaining dmg without losing all my armor or hp.

A tip for the future, if the optomizer doesn't list an item, simulate it. The Steam Axe has the same speed as a regular 2H axe, so you could pick any 2H axe, change the damage to the right numbers, and then give it the right enchantments.
    [IMG] [IMG]
Without any other gear, this is what you'd be looking at. Personally, I think the thing that would hurt you most if you changed would be the drop in attack speed because the LVL 43 and 45 2H swords are much faster than their lower level counterparts.

Those resistance enchantments add up to a total of 884. Where'd you get the rest to 1600+ from? If gems, then you must have some big diamonds. I was going to say that I'd try to find boots and gloves that instead of resist have damage... but you're more likely to get attack & travel speed on those, rather than damage. I don't think I've found any, to be completely honest (boots or gloves with +damage). Then I guess you're left with continuing to look for that perfect 2H (which I wish you the best of luck for ;)), farming up those rubies and maybe trying find any of the items you have resist on with HP/armor enchants instead. May the drop odds be ever in your favor!

I have 10 diamonds at +60 and 4 at +40. Got most from the cube drops, and I bought a few when I was at a lower level. Almost every cube I open has a diamond in it. I know it's random, but most days I can easily craft a polished just from the cube drops.

Since legendary item stats are completely based on luck, I'm not sure what is possible in gloves or boots. There isn't a unique glove or boot that makes sense for me at this point in time.

The Warlord set is first on my list, but that will take plenty of luck and maybe multiple events to get all 3, but that set would make a major difference to my toon.

I'm just kind of stuck until I find a weapon.

If you look here (R146 Patchnotes), you can see, among others, these claims:
    • we increased the chance for attack speed enchantments on gloves;
    • we increased the chance for movement speed enchantments on boots;
    • we increased the chance for enchantments that add additional damage on helmets, shoulders, and torsos.
So, yeah, luck is totally the biggest factor, but as you can see, they only added the possibility of damage enchants on helms, pauldrons & torsos, while boots & gloves got increased probability of having speed lines on them. Now, they used the term "increase the chance" so it doesn't really rule out the fact that gloves or boots might have damage on them, but if they do, it's certainly extremely rare. I've dropped all of those 3 kinds of items with +damage multiple times, but never boots or gloves.

As for uniques... as you've said yourself, nothing stands out in terms of boots & gloves, unless you're going for completing sets. The Artifact Merchant in Andrakasch does offer some, but the gloves have +30% critical damage and some minuscule base armor and the boots do have added damage on them, some travel speed and again, that tiny base armor. None of these are really worth it for you, for they would make you lose a lot of defence while not giving you much in return.

Just curious, but have you set your talent bonus for the two-handed weapon or for the one-handed? I have one ranger with a two-handed talent and one with the one-handed. Each get more drops of the weapon type selected in the talent tree.

I switched to the 2h talent at lvl 43 once I found my first 2h exo sword. That was during the last big event a couple of weeks ago, and from that time forward I've opened 9 legendary 1 hand weapons, mostly axes and hammers. I got 2 yesterday farming Blackborg.

I've only gotten 5 exo 2h weapons so far, 2 swords and 3 axes.

I'm wondering if it takes a virgin sacrifice to the DSO gods to get a leg 2h to drop :p Luckily while farming for the upcoming moon event, I've been stacking up on gem drops from the cubes. Mostly diamonds of course, but it all adds up.

Once I get a few thousand more blue ess, I'll go back to farming hod, upgrading what I have and hoping for that semi OP weapon.
