Damage Per Sec

Ok, some maths wiz out there please help me work this out.

This is looking at my mage and against another mage's stats, but the concept applies to all classes.

My mage friend has:
speed: 1.26
base dmg: 556-614
crit hit: 21.9%
damage per second on weapon: 142.28

My mage stats:
speed: 1.9
base dmg: 812-1124
crit hit: 60.1%
damage per second on weapon: 137.22

Now somebody please explain how he is causing more damage per second?! Maybe it doesn't need a maths wiz and it's super simple, but I'm missing it.

 

The weapon dps applies only to the weapon. It is actually fairly useless. It doesn't take into account any other stats except those of the weapon. The dps numbers on weapons are only good for comparing one weapon to another, and then not even very good (see below).

Overall, with your stats, you are doing more dps on your character than your friend. Your weapon is (slightly) less damaging, per second, than your friend's weapon. This is misleading, though, because the dps stated on the weapon doesn't account for crit chance or crit dmg present on the weapon, AFAIK.

Edit: Basically, it is safe to say you can pretty-much ignore the dps numbers on weapons and determine what is best by experience, intuition or one of those build comparison tools.

 

What Sev Said. The only thing that his higher DPS wand indicates is that it has more damage and speed enchantments than your wand. The only time I've seen a weapon's DPS number looked at with any seriousness is with 2H DK weapons where the best ones are % weapon damage and damage. 2H DKs generally prefer to get their crit and crit damage (and speed, but speed lines no longer show up on 2Hs anymore) elsewhere to make best use of the massive % weapon damage lines.

 

Aha, that's the crux of it. I was being led to think it was otherwise! phew... all that farming wasn't for nought

Aha, well out from what you wrote is clear to see your friend is doing more damage pff, this is really weird.. I would recommend you to take a look at your gear....
