Let me explain the thread title.

My addiction to DSO boarders on sickness. I'm a competitive type and enjoy the challenge of building strong characters in games. My sickness started in the 80's inspired by table top AD&D and got worse once computers adopted the genre, then exploded with early MMO's. So...... you could say it's a chronic illness.

I have invested in my toon; a little monthly to make him stronger, mostly gems and inventory with a few cots here and there to gear up. The financial piece has pretty much dropped off over the last year except for premium. But, I farm my EDIT off and invest way too much time ignoring other activities to do so.

The money part is what is surprising. I was curious as to how much I had spent on DSO so I did a search on my credit card purchases to BP over the last 3 years.

I then did a mental tally of PreDSO years, purchasing store/Steam/online games, buying better controllers/mice/routers/headphones/keyboards etc., I then deducted what money I was NOT spending for other entertainment by being at home playing instead of partying, going shopping or to the movies for entertainment, eating out etc.

Result of my nonscientific research: I spend much less money now(especially over the last year) than i did hopping from game to game, and looking for entertainment elsewhere.

Thank you BP, thank you for helping me save for retirement.

I always buy the games and software from warez sites.
I have never spent a dime on game ... never will.
So in my case I don't see any money saving.

Lol, I hear you BigPapa :D Fortunately, I eased into retirement back in '08 and now I can spend all the money I want now on hobbies/recreation/entertainment. Gotta spend it all before my times up :D

Professional help is overrated but the meds can be pretty cool ;) Btw the correct term these days is "disorder" :)

Buy? Hmm never, heard of anyone "buying" cracked software from warez sites

    Luck be with ye,

So exactly how do you "buy" the games at a store without ever spending a dime on a game?

Ill translate yes ..I hate reading all these whiners about a game ..im trying to tell them to shut up .. without being rude .the take a med thing was really funny though...how the hell he thinks he's saving money when it explains that he's spending in the same sentence ...is that clear enough ..you.....!

Ahhhh, I think i see. You're trying to tell the OP to shut up (politely) cause he's whining. I think I see you didn't understand the OP's intent. I'll make it simpler, although much less entertaining.

If a meal cost $5 and I start eating ramen instead at 27 cents a package, I save money.;) The meal is other games, which cost more than this game. Thus, the title of the thread. Not sure where you inferred whining, so I won't decode that.

You realize that your point of play if you like it or don't play if you don't like it is entirely missed on some people...

I've seen a few people on this forum who have stated that they quit playing or are leaving or found a better game or whatever, yet they are still here complaining...

It is completely free to complain and quite easy to do, going out and finding a game that is completely fair is not quite as easy ... or they would have done it and we would never hear from them again.

Are you kidding me? This game does not save money unless you seriously play this game without paying! I mean for me, it's N/A because I haven't spent a cent... however, that's because I find DSO as a free game is okay to play with, but a joke if you'd think I'd blow money into this with the amount of known bugs and issues devs have yet to address/fix. The exploits of gaming mechanics makes me want to facepalm too (hence why I chose to be a non-PvP player in this game).

I have talked to this game to my work colleague and since then he has been my best gaming partner. However, I really regretted mentioning DSO because he has spent enough to BP that I felt bad, I personally believing that money spent should go to other things like saving in the bank, buying better essential items for his place (extra linen, vacuum cleaner, ceiling fan), or nicer clothing for his modest wardrobe. But then again, that's just me... he's content paying, and if he's happy, then I can't really complain because I want him to be happy.

To me, a better investment is purchasing some other MMO games my family members play. I won't name the name of said games because I'm unsure if mentioning other game titles in the forum is considered kosher, and I haven't gone that route myself because I felt I 'invested' too much time on this game to try another game and give this one up.

I guess what I'm trying to express to the OP is that you're not really saving money at all but merely reallocating your funds to DSO from other things. If you really want to save money while getting decent entertainment, I'd suggest going to the local library to get some good gamebooks out and curl up at home with a nice homemade drink and stretch on the couch.

Ahh! You sound as bad as the said partner I've mentioned! If you use your analogy of saving money on food by eating ramen instead, you realize ramen by itself is not very nutritious and yes... you're saving money but you're sacrificing yourself by other means! You can still get good value without becoming too frugal. At least add some vegetables and meats to your ramen so you won't get fainting spells.

I'm getting a little sick of all this whining lately about paying or not paying (not applied to the OP)

    It's simple for me.

    1) DSO is a firm where people work. People need to eat. DSO tries to earn some money so they can pay their employees. hmmm, look familiar to me, my company does the same for me ...

    2) You can play this game for free. But nobody said free players will of should have the same tools as paying customers (read this word carefully : customers !) Get over this or move on.

    3) If you go out on saterday night having some fun, alone or with friends, how much fun do you 'buy' with x amount of cash ? How much can you buy with that same x amount of cash in this game ? I still think an evening out is more expensive then a month P2P on DSO

So stop whining and move on :)

Don't get me wrong. If the OP is happy with investing on DSO, that's the main thing that counts. If it costs a little more, why not? If it's a step down from saving, even better! So as long as savings doesn't sacrifice value of the overall experience, that's fine.

However, never hurts to try gaming books. I think it's fun to flip the pages and it doesn't hurt the eyes as much as hours staring at a screen after a while.

And yes, I agree the same amount spent on going out to the movies or clubbing with drinks... you can stretch that same dollar out much more if spent on DSO. Even if it'd be gambled out to the Joker, you'd come out much better than if you were to put that same amount in the casinos/lottery tickets. :D

When I was spending money in the game(mind you it was mild, maybe $750 over 3 years.) I always looked at it as a time investment or pay rate choice.

Lets say I needed 1000 more COTS to ID an item. I now had a choice of a farm routine or to buy them. The farm option varied in amount of time depending on which release and the strength of my toon, but lets say that it would take 4 hours to farm the COT and some byproduct ander. On the other hand; I could buy 4000 ander which would cost $4. So if I farmed the COTS I would be making $1 an hour doing something that was otherwise not enjoyable. Since I make more than $1 an hour IRL(most do), I could do a time pay rate comparison.

When there was something in game that was enjoyable or even tolerable and I could gain the COT/Ander I didn't think this way. Play the game, get the loot, and ID as desired. Completing PW's is an example of that. But when it was a endless grind routine to get the COT/Ander, I considered the pay rate comparison, and I'd rather work for and spend my salary, instead of working for $1 an hour.
